Why a free standing light source?

Some businesses have a requirement to expose screens that are simply huge by comparison to those most small t shirt print shops use. And when screens become large, a speclal solution to exposing under vacuum is needed.

This is where our range of free standing metal halide light sources becomes a necessity. By removing the light source and vacuum system from the enclosure of our self contained range, clients' are now able to purchase a free standing light source and vacuum table enabling the exposure of very large screens.

Dalesway is proud to offer a range of three free standing light sources, each with diffferent power levels to cope with a range of screen sizes.

The larger the screen, the more powerful the light source has to be, and to ensure optimal exposure, a light integrator must be incorporated into any purhase decision.

1600 watt free standing light source

The 1600 watt light source uses a unique sealed beam lamp which emits light in both the 420 nm and 365 nm wavelength. This allows the unit to expose both Diazo and Photo polymer sensitive products, and makes it ideal for exposing small to medium print formats.

The exposure is controlled by an automatic pre-set time or by an optional light integrator. Once the shutter has been activated, the unit is brought from 400 watt stand-by power to full power.

A near silent cooling fan keeps the lamp-house, shutters, drive motor and controls cool even when left in stand-by for long periods.

  • Automatic shutter
  • Universal output lamp
  • Stand mounted or overhead mount
  • Low power standy feature
  • Cooling fan
  • Pre-set timer with integrator socket

4000 / 6000 watt free standing light source

The 4/6 kw rapid start system provides a high power light source that is both economical and reliable in operation. The exposure is controlled by an automatic pre-set timer or optional light integrator. Wide angle optics give an even light coverage and this contributes to reduced exposure times. This light source is ideal for exposing medium to large formats.

Once the exposure is complete, the lamp is switched off and rapidly cooled for the next exposure giving a re-start time of 90 seconds. When the lamp is on stand-by, power consumption is 40 watts making this unit extremely economical to operate.

The slim design of this lamp means very little floor space is used, and when installed overhead, allows a low ceiling height to be utilised. A safety window absorbs radiation below the 320 nm level thus removing any dangerous ultra violet radiation.

  • Rapid start system
  • Wide angle optics
  • Stand mounted or overhead mount
  • Toughened glass window
  • Thermostatically controlled cooling
  • Pre-set timer with integrator socket

The 8 kw automatic shutter light source has been developed for applications where instant repeat exposures are required. This makes the unit ideal for exposing large and oversize jumbo formats.

The exposure is controlled by an automatic pre-set timer or an optional light integrator. The automatic shutter is driven directly allowing for precise exposure control. When in stand-by, the unit consumes 1 kw of power, which given the high power of the device, is extremely economical.

A safety window absorbs radiation below the 320 nm level thus removing any dangerous ultra violet radiation, and both Diazo or Photo polymer lamps can be used with this light source.

  • Automatic shutter
  • 4 or 8 kW selection
  • Stand mounted or overhead mount
  • Toughened glass window
  • Thermostatically controlled cooling

Light integrator

In order to control the amount of light needed to ensure correct exposure levels at the subject, a light integrator can be supplied as an optional extra for each of our Metal Halide light sources.

A light cell that is fitted with a dedicated filter measures the light received at the subject. This information is then used to control the length of the exposure and only when the pre-selected quantity of light is received by the light cell, does the exposure finish.

As a result, any variations in light output (due to ageing of the lamp), lamp distance or power fluctuations are automatically compensated for by the light source, thus ensuring accurate exposure each and every time.

The use of a light integrator is imperative for any busy exposure room. The unit can memorise 7 different exposure settings and programming is quick and easy. Disconnection from the mains supply will not cause memorised settings to be lost.

  • 7 Memory channels
  • 1 Manual channel
  • Easy programming
  • Metal case
  • Thermostatically controlled cooling

FAQs...

and the answers for: Free standing metal halide light sources

Free standing metal halide light sourceThe free standing range of metal halide exposure units for screen printing are very straightforward machines to use, but like most straightforward products, sometimes it is necessary to provide some background information that will help to clarify initial concerns.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions and we hope that these will help you to decide if either one of these products is the machine for your business.

Click on a question below to reveal the answer:

  • Why is this system referred to as a free standing light source?

Whilst some screen printers use an all-in-one device commonly referred to as a self contained exposure unit, there are also free standing vacuum tables and light sources that can be supplied by different manufacturers and work independently of each other.

Most commonly, screens that measure in excess of 200cm in length or width are best exposed using a free standing light source and vacuum frame.

  • Why are free standing light sources available in different power levels?

The light source is always positioned at a distance from the screen and artwork that is necessary to expose the entire area of the screen. As the screen increases in size, so too does the distance that the light source must be set at to ensure accurate exposure.

The nature of the emulsion used also impacts on the power of the light source required.

  • Which power level should I choose?

Always consider the size of the screen that you need to expose and the time or light units needed to achieve the correct exposure at a set distance from the screen. Please call us if you require advice when choosing a unit.

  • Why does this exposure device use a metal halide light source?

A metal halide light source is the only type of light that is powerful enough to expose large format screens that may be between 100cm and up to 200cm away from the vacuum table.

  • Do I need a light integrator as well as the light source?

Think how much is costs to coat a very large screen both in materials and preparation time. The last thing you want to do is get the exposure calculation wrong, so to get the most consistent exposures a light integrator is a necessity.

By using a light integrator, any variations in light output (due to ageing of the lamp), lamp distance or power fluctuations are automatically compensated for by the light source, thus ensuring accurate exposure each and every time.

Our self contained exposure units are fitted with light integrators as standard.

  • How do I set the exposure time?

The exposure time is set in seconds or light units depending on the preferred method of exposure.

  • Why are the units offered in different power levels?

This allows the most flexibility for installation of the system when supplying a unit to a customer. In addition, the high power light sources are needed when exposing larger screens and artwork and some substrates can be cured very quickly if a high output lamp is available.

  • What power requirements are needed?

A standard 13 amp domestic plug socket is needed for any of the single phase 240 volt models.

All other models require a three phase 400 volt supply which may not be available to residential homes or some small business premises.

  • How much space do I need?

The simple answer is it could be more than you think!

The amount of space will be dictated by the size of the vacuum frame and the distance that the light source must be set from the screen to ensure accurate and consistent exposure across the whole screen. This distance may vary when screens of different sizes are exposed but you must always plan around the maximum that will could needed.

The light source is supplied on heavy duty castors hence can be easily moved toward and away from the vacuum table.
